FINNE Women: Rachael Mayne

FINNE Women: Rachael Mayne

Rachael is a painter and clinical psychologist based in Auckland, New Zealand. She is known for her large-scale impressionistic floral works - lush, immersive gardens that feel less like something to look at and more like somewhere to go. Her paintings have found homes across New Zealand and internationally.

What do you hope people feel when they engage with your art?

I think viewing art is a deeply personal and individual experience, so I'm always curious to hear what people see and feel when they view my pieces - whether it's a reminder of a loved one, being taken to a particular time or memory, or simply an emotional connection. For me, I like to feel immersed into the gardens as I create them. As a result this elicits a feeling of peace, light, beauty, and escapism.

What's a piece of advice you'd give to your younger self?

Stop being so hard on yourself - and authenticity is your greatest superpower.

What makes you feel confident, even in small ways?

Wearing bright colours and fun prints.

What's your go-to way of wearing your hair when you want to feel your best?

Smooth waves.

What's a small, everyday thing that makes you feel joyful?

Laughing, dancing and being silly with my children.
